Preventative Maintenance

Preventative Maintenance

Vehicle maintenance is meant to be preventive in nature. The reason for changing your vehicle’s fluids such as engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, differential oil or gearbox oil is to prevent the need for premature repairs. Replacement of consumable parts such as brake pads and brake rotors, wiper blades, filters, bulbs etc. also falls under the category of preventative maintenance.

Repair work is completely different. A repair is necessitated by a failure in a part or other component. All things being equal, most vehicles typically don’t need major repairs during their warranty period.
If you follow many manufacturers’ vehicle maintenance schedules, you’ll be surprised that often there really isn’t much maintenance expected to be done at all. The most common maintenance required are regular oil changes.

While most manufacturers’ recommended preventative maintenance schedules ensure that your vehicle won’t need much in the way of repairs during the warranty period, they might not be sufficient to ensure that your vehicle continues to perform at its best beyond that time period. In other words, sticking to the bare minimum as specified by the manufacturers’ recommended maintenance schedule may result in more repairs being needed in the post-warranty period.

Owners who plan to keep their car past the warranty period, or who buy a car after the warranty expires, are advised to follow what we like to call an ‘old school’ preventative maintenance schedule that predates a lot of the free scheduled maintenance that you see today. That way – you can be sure that your vehicle will last for years to come.
